Staten Island Chapter makes plans for its late fall events

By FRANK J. DECANDIDO
Staten Island Chapter President

The Staten Island Chapter held a meeting on Sept. 6, during which I shared the items discussed at the NYSSCPA’s monthly presidents’ call on Aug. 23, and chapter members discussed upcoming events. The Society continues to encourage all chapters to brainstorm on ways to engage new members. At the Aug. 23 presidents’ call, I indicated that the Staten Island Chapter will be trying to engage NextGen members through a new NextGen group, and will announce our chapter meetings on the Society website. I will also be reaching out to the colleges on Staten Island to see if any recent graduates would like to join the chapter and come to meetings, as well as get involved with chapter events.

At the Sept. 6 meeting, Sharon Sica-Costanzo said she had a scholarship call on Sept. 2. The winning students will be notified of their scholarships within the next couple of weeks. The scholarship winners will be invited to Education Night on Nov. 10 at The Staaten at Forest Avenue on Staten Island, at 6 p.m. This event is for college students, and the agenda is being finalized.

On Sept. 8, the Staten Island Chapter held a continuing education session on college planning. Topics included the new waiver for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program; new student loan rates; an update on the student loan payment pause expiring on Jan. 1, 2023; a review of the FAFSA [Free Application for Federal Student Aid] for the 2023–2024 academic year; and the updated legislation regarding student loan forgiveness, including the one-time debt cancellation for federal loans. The PowerPoint presentation is available; if interested, please email me at the address below.

The Staten Island Bowl-a-Thon will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12—details to follow.

The chapter’s taxation conference will take place at The Staaten on Nov. 18, and it will be an in-person event. Confirmed topics include an IRS update, a trusts and estates update, a Social Security update, and New York and New Jersey updates. The agenda and speakers are being finalized. There will also be a free New Jersey Tax Update on Oct. 27. This event will take place online and will provide two hours of CPE.

The World of Accounting event, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21, at the St. John’s University Staten Island campus, has received a good response. So far, 14 of the 15 Staten Island high schools have indicated they will be attending this event. The agenda for this event is being finalized. As for topics, the following have been confirmed: CPA career opportunities, Susan E Wagner High School’s Career and Technical Education Program, forensic accounting and financial investigations.

Finally, the College of Staten Island Career Fair will take place on Friday, Oct. 28. It will be an online event.
